Design That Adapts
VP shapes building solutions around operational needs, site demands and evolving project priorities from the very beginning.
Communities increasingly look to sports facilities as catalysts for tourism, recreation and economic development. In Wichita, the challenge was creating a venue large enough to attract regional and national tournaments while remaining adaptable for local programming throughout the year.
Through close collaboration and a flexible building approach, the project delivered a multi-sport complex designed to accommodate changing event requirements, maximize operational efficiency and provide lasting value for athletes, residents and visitors across the region.

Stryker Sports Complex
Sports facilities serve many purposes. They host tournaments, support local recreation programs and create gathering places that bring communities together. Increasingly, they also serve as economic drivers, attracting visitors and generating activity that extends beyond the playing surface.
Those objectives shaped the development of the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, KS.
The City of Wichita envisioned a facility capable of supporting youth and amateur sports while strengthening the region's position as a destination for tournaments and special events. To achieve that vision, the project required more than additional courts and playing fields. It needed the flexibility to host a variety of sports, accommodate changing event formats and provide a high-quality experience for athletes, families and spectators throughout the year.
Working alongside the City of Wichita, Crossland Construction and project stakeholders, Varco Pruden™ helped deliver a building solution designed around those goals. The completed facility has become one of the region's premier sports destinations, supporting both community recreation and sports tourism initiatives.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and coordinated execution can create a facility that serves multiple audiences while remaining adaptable to changing needs over time.
No two sporting events operate exactly the same way.
Tournament organizers frequently require different court configurations, spectator arrangements and support spaces depending on the sport and level of competition. A facility designed for long-term success must be able to accommodate those changes efficiently.
The Stryker Sports Complex was developed with that flexibility in mind.
The indoor facility includes a large clear-span environment capable of supporting multiple competition layouts. Open interior spaces maximize usable floor area and allow operators to adapt the facility for a variety of athletic programs and special events throughout the year.
Rather than designing around a single sport, the project team focused on creating a venue capable of serving many purposes. This flexibility enables the facility to host basketball, volleyball and other indoor athletic competitions while supporting community events and regional gatherings.
That approach reflects a core principle of the Varco Pruden process: understanding how a building will function over time and engineering solutions that support evolving requirements.
The result is a facility that remains adaptable long after opening day.
While recreation was a primary objective, the project's impact extends well beyond athletics.
Regional tournaments bring athletes, coaches and families to Wichita from across the Midwest and beyond. Those visitors support hotels, restaurants, retail businesses and other local attractions, creating economic benefits throughout the community.
Recognizing that opportunity, city leaders sought a facility capable of attracting events that previously may have bypassed the region. The scale and flexibility of the complex help position Wichita as a competitive destination within the growing sports tourism market.
Crossland Construction noted that the project was developed to support both community recreation and visitor activity, creating a resource that serves local residents while helping generate broader economic impact.
The facility's ability to accommodate multiple events and user groups throughout the year helps maximize utilization and long-term value. Rather than serving a single purpose, the complex functions as a year-round destination capable of adapting to changing schedules and community needs.
